Do you think the World Cup qualifying for UEFA is kind of bloated and could use fewer countries?
I’m talking about the 5 that are closer to Asia, such as Kazakstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, George, and Israel.
This would bring the # of countries in UEFA down to 48, where they could have 6 groups of Eight Teams, each group winner qualifies and then the 8 runner ups draw for a home/away playoff, with the 4 winners advancing. (That makes 12 countries instead of 13, and theoretically Asia would get 5.5 or 6 berths instead of 4.5)
Asia would also have 48 teams with the 5 new ones.
I’m not exactly sure why certain countries choose affiliations over the other I just find it absurd that Portugal has to play Kazakstan to represent Europe.
This is based on efficiency in logistics and not meant to be a political statement. I’m assuming Israel is in UEFA for strong reasons, but they are surrounded by Asian and African countries. If there is no way they’d be accepted in Asia, then San Marino could roll in with Italy or the Faroe’s with Scotland. After all, Madeira players team up with Portugal

Isreal has to stay with UEFA, and it’s funny to see San Marino get blasted 13-0 by Germany. The UEFA federation knew inviting more countries would make travel distances greater and qualifying more obtuse, so let them deal with the mess.
