How much spending money would I need on a 18 night cruise from Rome to Fort Lauderdale?
Hi,
This is my first post so i hope i’m doing this right.
I’d love to do an 18 night cruise from Rome to Fort Lauderdale with the Holland America Cruise Line. The itinerary is as follows:
Day 1 Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy
Day 2 Livorno (Florence) Italy
Day 3 Monte Carlo, Monaco
Day 4 Barcelona, Spain
Day 5 Cartagena, Spain
Day 6 Malaga, Spain
Day 7 Cadiz (Seville), Spain
Day 8 Lisbon, Portugal
Day 9 At Sea
Day 10 Funchal, Madeira
Day 11 Funchal, Madeira
Day 12 At Sea
Day 13 At Sea
Day 14 At Sea
Day 15 At Sea
Day 16 At Sea
Day 17 At Sea
Day 18 At Sea
Day 19 Fort Lauderdale, Florida
I live in Australia so it’ll be reasonably pricey for airfares to and from. How expensive is Europe? I’ve heard so many different stories about ti being so expensive and other people say it pretty much costs the same as Australia, i’m not too sure what to believe.
Any advice as to how much i’d have to save would be greatly appreciated, I don’t want to book it then find that I cant afford it or worse, realise im broke halfway through the cruise.
Has anyone cruised with Holland America? How much is tipping and all that?
Thanks
Nicole

The Euro is very strong against every other currency. That means its going to be very costly to buy things in Europe. Right now your looking at 1.70 Aussie dollars to 1 Euro.
Your greatest expenses is going to be how much shopping you’ll do.
If your a moderate drinker, you need to budget about 50% of what you paid for the cruise for drinks.
Remember, you can’t sail by yourself. Any prices quoted is based on 2 people per room.
For this cruise, I just looked at the price and I’m probably on the low end but you are going to need to have about $10,000 and that’s in USD, roughtly that’s in the 12,000 AUD range
How much do you need, ZERO!
But if you want to drink alcohol on board think $8.00 per drink. That might be a little high but it’s been 2 years since my last cruise. Do you gamble? budget for that when at sea. When we cruise I plan on $5.00 per day in tips, per person. Then $20 per day when at port for Tee shirts etc. Alcohol Zero. I don’t mind an occasional drink, but not at those prices.
It really depends on you. This is first cruise? I wouldn’t do the one you have planned. 18 days on board is a long time, for a first cruise. My first cruise was 7 days, and I wanted off after 5 days. Now after 14 cruises, the longer the better! I suggest a smaller 5-7 day cruise around S Pacific. Cheaper air fare and more control on your end.
If you like e-mail me at dave.greg@yahoo.com and we can get into more detail.
I really suggest you start with a smaller cruise and therefore a smaller price
Either way I hope you enjoy.
I did a similar cruise and simply used my credit card for everything. That way you have a receipt of whatever you buy, plus it convert the money for you without trying to figure it out for yourself. But like others said everything is very expensive in Europe. I only spent about $500, but then I bought very little. Monte Carlo could be the one place where you spend the most if your not careful. BTW if you do use a credit card, be sure to call the card company and let them know where your going. Here in the USA if your credit card company sees strange charges, they put a severe limit on your charge card unless you let them know in advance that it will be you using the card.
That is such an individual question. It depends on what your needs are. Do you do a lot of shopping? Do you drink a lot? Do you gamble? Will you be sending your clothes to dry cleaning or laundry? Will you be using the services of the SPA? Will you want to go to specialty restaurants on board? Will you be dining in ports? All of these expenses will be higher than you’re used to. Tipping comes to about $10 per person per day, but many people give more for extra services. You tip extra in the bars, for room service, SPA service, etc.
You can look up the excursions you can choose from by going into your cruise line on line. That will give you an idea of the cost of excursions. However, you can get a cheaper rate if you wait to buy an excursion on shore.
You do not spend cash on a ship. You’re given a pass card, which at the end of the cruise you can pay for in cash or charge to a credit card.
I just returned from a 12 day cruise. I spent money on tips and excursions, nothing else. So, it’s all up to you. Don’t go “overboard”. Know what you can spend. And have a wonderful time.
Well, you do not spend actual cash money while on the ship. Just about Everything you purchase on the ship will be charged to your room key/card, which is linked to your credit card. So, drinks, gifts, spa, tips will all be charged to your card. You will need cash/credit card for anything you buy at the ports. I would bring at least $500-6000 in cash. Tipping is $11 per day per person, can be adjusted if you wish but I dont recommend it. The staff works hard and depends on the tips as part of there salary.
Hope I helped!
