Madeira–The Pearl of the Atlantic
Madeira with the reputation of “The Pearl of The Atlantic” is the territory of Portugal. It is located in the north Atlantic which is next to the northwest coast of Africa. The acreage, about 769 sq. km that is of subtropical climate, is made up of isle which includes volcanoes. This isle is found by Portuguese in 1418 with no inhabitants.
Madeira isle includes two islands with inhabitants–Madeira Island and Porto Island, and two islands with no inhabitants. Madeira Island is the biggest of all with low population. Funchal, an industry and commerce center is the capital City of Madeira Island. Not only there are beautiful scenery and mild climate, but also here is the place where the famous Madeira wine is made. This kind of wine tastes nice for its special making method. After the grapes are fermented, heat them in a dry room to make the taste purer. It is very popular with wine tasters.
Funchal has a colorful market for farm produce. There are many kinds of foodstuff such as Tuna Fish, Angola fish and all kinds of cheap and delicious vegetables. In addition, you might have a taste of the famous dish “Espetada” as well. This dish clear and unique as the beef is cut into grain shape, and then baked by the fire of bay tree branches.
You can have a different feeling of quietness when you leave the busy Funchal and have a walk around some small towns on the north bank. Walking into the town of St Anna, you can see endless farmlands, flowers and red houses. Going west from the town of St Anna, you would get to the port of Mohnish.
This small town is a place for the urbanites to preserve their health. You can have a good swim in the pool made by black basalts, have an overlook on the hill, have a good taste of the seafood or fall asleep with the sound of ocean waves.
These Sea Islands have a surprisingly mild climate for their special geography position. The very steady average temperature, 22 degrees centigrade in summers and 16 degrees centigrade in winters, together with humidity maintained in a good level, reflects the subtropical characteristics of the islands.
