Questions about Funchal, Madeira Islands (Portugal)?

If my wife and I wanted to plan a trip ourselves to Funchal, Madeira Islands (Portugal), how would we do that? Fly from North America to Portugal, then what? Is there some kind of public transportation between the islands and Portugal, air or sea? I seriously have no idea, can anyone help?
