Visit to Madeira following severe storms

This morning President Barroso visited the southern part of Madeira (Portugal) after the devastating storms that struck the island on 20 February. He reiterated his message of solidarity to the people affected and their families. Barroso assured the regional authorities that the Commission is committed to helping them recover from the disaster as soon as possible. He expressed his readiness to mobilise upon request the Solidarity Fund or other financial assistance. This is testament to “the principle of solidarity as a fundamental EU value”.
